At Emily’s Moana Party, by far and away the favourite treats were these Tamatoa’s Shell Cupcakes. The kids were drawn straight to them like a crab to something shiny! They were super fun and easy to make. Here’s the ‘how-to’ if you want to make your own.

To make your own you’ll need:

  • cupcakes
  • white buttercream
  • mixed gold sprinkles
  • gum paste and a mold for making gumpaste shells
  • gold lustre powder, rose water (or vodka) and a paintbrush
  • Maui’s hook cutouts, glued onto toothpicks
  1. Start off by icing your cupcakes, you can ice them any old way because they’ll be smushed into the sprinkles anyway. I piped on a swirl using a jumbo round tip.
  2. Mix your various gold sprinkles together in a bowl.
  3. Dunk your iced cupcakes into the sprinkles, making sure to cover all of the icing.
  4. Add a gumpaste shell (I made mine in advance and painted them with gold lustre dust mixed with rose water to make paint).
  5. Last up add Maui’s hook to each cupcake and you are done!
